  • Pay-per-click advertising
    • Google AdWords - As we explained in our help section, AdWords allows you to advertise on Google in their "sponsored links" section. If you received an AdWords credit with the purchase of Deluxe, Premium or other hosting plan, we would highly encourage you to use that credit to determine if AdWords will work for your business. Google provides facilities that will show you the number of "impressions" (the number of times your ad is displayed) you receive, as well as the number of times Google users "clicked" (went to your site). AdWords may be particularily effective for those who are in "niche" markets (speciality products). In that situation, your "cost-per-click" should be relatively low. In larger, more competitive markets (e.g., web hosting), the sheer number of offerers, along with the cost-per-click, may not make it the best option.
    • Yahoo/Overture - This is a Pay Per Click (PPC) program similar to Google's. The benefits in going with Yahoo/Overture over Google is that Yahoo is smaller and they have fewer participants. As a result, their PPC "bid" rates tend to be less. In either case, you are guaranteed exposure on their search results no matter how far down you are in their normal search results.
    • ABCSearch - This program is similar to that of Google and Yahoo, with two significant "twists". First, it is not a "pay as you go" facility. Instead, you pay a certain amount of money (it can be as low as you want) up front and the cost of each "click" to your site is then deducted from that amount. When the funds you paid are exhausted, your ad stops being displayed. Second, there is no "sponsored links" section. Rather, the amount you "bid" on each click determines your ranking in the overall search results. If you are the highest "bidder", your ad will always be the first in the list.
    • ExactSeek - This is another variation of the pay-per-click, but again, with a twist. At ExactSeek you pay a small amount (currently $12) for each ad you want to run. For that fee, ExactSeek will run your ad for 3 months. You certainly won't receive the same number of "hits" as you would with Google or Yahoo, but overall, it's an inexpensive option.
  • Advertising Directories
    • ClassifiedAds.com - This is one of literally thousands of directories specifically targeted to those who want to buy/sell on the Internet. It is similar in concept to the "want ads" in your local newspaper, with different categories for the items to be sold. You can place ads for free. For an additional fee, you can have your ads placed higher in the results. You can also pay a fee to have your ad "blasted" (replicated) on thousands of other classified ad directories.
    • INetGiant.com - Another of the largest classified ad sites on the Internet. Free to advertise. As with classifiedads.com, INetGiant.com offers additional features for a fee, including access to their opt-in email marketing list.
    • ClassifiedAdsForFree.com - Another in the line of free ad placement directories.

  • Secondary Revenue Streams - Believe it or not, you can make money on the Internet by placing ads on your own website. If you are selling your own items, you don't, of course, want to advertise other companies that sell the same items as you. But there are a number of opportunites available that will help your bottom line. These are typically referred to as "affiliate programs", where you, via your website, allow other companies to place ads on your site. Depending on the program, you earn a commission either by a person "clicking through" to the advertisers site, or by the completion of a sale.
    • Google AdSense - You may have gone to sites on the web and seen small "Ads By Google" boxes on that site. This is google AdSense. When a person who is browsing the Internet lands on a site with AdSense ads, the owner of that site receives a small (literally pennies) commission if that person "clicks" on one of the ads and goes to the other site. It doesn't seem like much, but if you get significant traffic to your site, and enough people "click through" on the ads, those pennies can mount up. You must apply to be an AdSense advertiser. Their selection criteria for who is accepted tends to be a mystery however.
    • Commission Junction - In our opinions, this is a great program. Commission Junction (CJ) has literally thousands of both large and small companies that advertise through their facility. Among their clients are companies such as Verizon, Home Depot, Buy.com, CitiBank, and many more. Signup with CJ is easy and painless. Anytime a visitor to your site clicks through to one of the advertisers and purchases one or more products, YOU get a commission on that sale. These commissions can run anywhere from 2-25%. And the best part is, unlike Google, you get to chose which companies will advertise on your site.

  • Search Engine Site Analysis
    • - It's truly amazing how many people get their website online and then months afterward, wonder why that site isn't rated higher (or ever placed) in the various search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSNSearch, AOL, and so on. If you are serious about getting exposure in the search engines you need to make sure your site is optimized for them. Things that seem minor, such as having busted internal links,or "spamming keywords", will absoultely kill your chances of getting any sort of decent placement.
    • Traffic Blazer - We want to be up front about this so, yes, this is a product we sell. But at the same time it is worth every penny. Traffic Blazer will analyze your site and tell you if you have problems on any of your pages that might cause a problem getting placed in the search engines. It will analyze your HTML code, meta tags, and more. In addition, it will submit your site to all of the major search engines, directories, blog "pingers", and so forth. It will give you detailed reports of which search engines have listed your site, and which haven't. It can even be set to automatically rebsubmit your site to the search engines on a regular basis. Amazing product. HECK of a deal for $19.95/yr. But whether you use Traffic Blazer or another service, you simply cannot overlook this requirement. Leaders don't run at the back of the pack do they??
    • Net Mechanic Search Engine Power Pack - Analysis tool to check your site for search engine optimization. Excellent tool, and if you don't go with Traffic Blazer this is one we can recommend.

  • Submit Your Site - OK, so you have done your best to optimize your site. Now you need to submit it to the search engines for inclusion. You can do this yourself, or you can use various products or services to do it for you. Most sites that do search engine "blasting" (submissions to large numbers of search engines) will charge a fee. Don't worry about the ones that tell you they will submit your site to 300,000 search engines. There are only a dozen or so that really matter.
