A Safelist is an email list where all the members of the list have agreed to receive whatever types of allowable messages the list was created to provide. The primary purpose of a safelist is to allow members to send ads, marketing literature, information, and so forth, to other members without being accused of being a spammer.

Although you couldn’t tell it from the contents of my inbox, sending spam email is an illegal activity subject to fine. The issue of spam mail has been elevated in recent years. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Domain Registrars are starting to take spam complaints very seriously, and some of them are starting to pull the accounts or domains of those accused of engaging in the activity.

Safelists use a double-opt in method to ensue that people on the list do, in fact, agree to receive the information. Double opt-in requires people to not only subscribe to a particular list, but to validate that subscription by responding to an email verification request. This method prevents people from maliciously subscribing another person to a list. Safelists also provide a link on each email sent allowing a person to opt-out of the list at any time.

A safelist can provide a tremendous advantage to people in the marketing industry. There are a large number of safelists available that you can join, typically for a fee, in order to market your products and services to the people on the list, and to do so in a legal manner.
